It’s fair to say, times are pretty weird at the moment. With the weather currently teasing us with thoughts of what the summer could have been, we are patiently having to put away our festival tickets and wave goodbye to the idea of beer gardens and BBQs. Maybe that’s a bit to doom and gloom, but it’s fair to say morale has taken a hit.
There is still reason for celebration, however. The internet has provided a platform to bring everyone together in new and innovative ways. The various social media challenges currently circling the web are proving a fun distraction, but also an interesting one, opening eyes and ears to new things. We love our music, so thought we would give blogging a go, in the form of our ‘5 songs Series’, where we pick out 5 of our favourite tracks for certain situations. Yeah, we’ve not exactly tried to reinvent the wheel here, but we’re hoping it might put a smile on your face and maybe some new tracks in your playlists.
First up, it makes sense to start with an obvious one. Sunshine. We would all rather be enjoying this gorgeous weather by the sea or in the sunshine with our mates, but that doesn’t mean you can’t still try and make the most of it. So, head to the garden, grab a brewskie, hook up the speaker and give these a whirl:
House of Dupree - Leon Vynehall
Start with a biggun right? The kind of song that just puts a smile on your face when it drops. This has been a certified classic for a while, just like many of Leon Vynehall’s tracks.
Your Kind of Lovin' - Never Dull
I’m a sucker for a good vocal loop (as I’m sure many people are), and this is just used to perfection. A truly happy song. Shout out to the bongos that always add that extra bit groove.
It'll All Be Over (DJ Koze Remix) - Gerry Read
I was convinced this was going to be the summer banger of 2019 that everyone was talking about, and it may not have been too far off, finding its way onto Radio 1 a few times. Dj Koze has been reliable for a big one like this on a yearly basis, going back to his remix of Operator and, of course, ‘Pick Up’ in 2018. Here’s to another one this year! But for now, this will definitely do.
Sunspear – O’Flynn
We could talk for days about O’Flynn, and I am sure he will be a frequent entrant into the 5 song series. For us (Cover3), Sunspear was our favourite tune to play out in 2019. Best way to sum it up is to talk you through our first time hearing it. Folamour has just finished a 2 hour set of funk and groove in the sun that’s got everyone over last night’s hangover, and we’re all wondering how, the much darker and techier, DJ Seinfeld is going to follow it up and keep spirits high. Queue Sunspear as the opening track and we were onto a winner.
So Far to Go (DJ Streaks Edit) – J Dilla
Similar to House of Dupree, the happy synths combined with the deep grooving bass provide the perfect soundtrack to enjoying a chilled bev in the sun. A good example of how a track can be sped up and tweaked to create new ways to enjoy it.
Honourable mentions
Everybody Loves The Sunshine – Roy Ayers
Back In The Days - Coeo
Sunny - Wild Dee
