5 Songs with Interesting Vocals

By Oli Ong

Now, there’s a running joke with people that know me and my music taste that I am allergic to music with vocals in it. Whilst I may not be one for your typical sing-a-long, I more than appreciate the affect a good vocal can have on a track. This week’s blog is an attempt to prove those people wrong – and share some awesome music.

I’m sorry to bring attention to our own work here, but I’m going to start with our latest release, and the song that made me want to write this blog. A good vocal can really add an x-factor to a track. It is something that I have tried to take into my own production but struggled to due to not being able to find good vocal samples to use (if anyone has any suggestions, please let me know!). I did, however, get lucky a few months ago when I stumbled across a beautiful album called the ‘The Land Where The Blues Began – The Alan Lomax Collection’. This is a gold mine of fantastic vocalists compiled by Alan Lomax, who travelled around, recording amazing singers showcasing their talents.

One of the tracks is ‘Satisfied’, sung by a lady called Florence Stamp and supported by ‘Group of Girls’. The beauty of it is that, like the rest of the album, the vocal stands alone and does not feature as part of a song or even use any instruments. It is a simple delight on the ears and instantly became something I wanted to incorporate into my music production. This is what I ended up with:

BONUS: Satisfied - listen to our latest release here: https://soundcloud.com/cover3_uk/satisfied

Jesse Rose – Pressure I can safely guarantee that we have overplayed this track. We are absolute suckers for a good vocal hook and this one is just delightful.

Amber Marks - Mixer (Donny Rotten Remix) This track has already featured in one of our blogs, with Chris selecting it as one of his 5 favourite Soundcloud Free Downloads (LINK HERE). An enchanting voice and very cleverly used by Donny Rotten here, to create an up-beat, disco-house floor filler. What a track – remixing at its finest.

Karizma – Work it Out

Definitely not sharing anything new here, but how could we not include Karizma in our blog on coolest vocals. The lyrics are as follows:

What you got a light bill due

(Work it out)

And you got a gas bill too

(Work it out)

Proving that you can make a banger out of anything. Catchy vocal + heavy beat = banger

Dauwd - Idris Dark and groovy, this is a fantastic song to mix up the vibe a bit in a set. The singer (who I have not managed to identify unfortunately) has one of the coolest voices that I have heard, providing something very different to your typical house vocal.

Durante - Wolf Country

Motivational song alert. This is a stomper, based around one of the coolest spoken word vocal samples I’ve come across – another no-brainer for this blog. If you have hit the wall, listen to this. You’re welcome!

Honourable mentions

Addison Groove - F!nk

Gimbrere - Mirage

Tim Duluxe - It just won't do

London Grammar - Hell to the Liars (London Grammar)
