This week's blog comes from RUBIX founding member, Mr SAM EDWRDS! Sam has played all over the country, starting his DJing journey in Birmingham before helping build RUBIX Events. Being the tech-house maestro, Sam is often the chosen closer of RUBIX nights, bringing the energy for the home stretch. Who better to ask for power house suggestions right?
Picking my Top 5 favourite ‘Power House’ tracks has been a hard process to go through. So, to distinguish these tracks I looked more into ones which made my sets more interesting, giving the atmosphere/vibe a bit of a wake up if things weren’t looking too lively.
All of these tracks have a huge place in my heart. It excites me to share them with others so writing this blog has sparked me with nostalgia and good memories as I listen back to them; especially in a time where clubs are currently closed limiting the opportunities to perform.
Eddy M - Killing
If you have played before, after or b2b with me over the last couple of years, you’ll probably already know this track. Sampled from Rage Against The Machine, it sits incredibly well in the track, making it sound like an original piece of music. Eddy is a talented musician which reflects throughout his production. His drums are complex by using plenty of variation with only small amounts of percussion, keeping his tracks clear with each element in their own space. It’s either his drums or the big stabs used which keeps this track in my current library.
Harry Ley - Love Parade
Yes, this is a remix of the Da Hools record ‘Meet Her At The Loveparade’, if you’re unaware of this one, you need to check this original track out before the Harry Ley version. It’s very recognisable for it’s resonate leads and robotic melody, which without knowing who it is, you could mistake it for a Vengaboys record. This track reaches out to different generations - whether you’re going to your first rave to watch Harry Ley, or you’re a rave ‘veteran’ who is no stranger to the Da Hool classic. That’s the beauty of classic House, Disco and Pop remix’s, the legends live on.
Ben Sterling - Vanilla Ice Remix
A remix of Ice Ice Baby? What more could you possibly want. This unbelievable remix makes you feel like Ben produced this for Ice when the original came out. Like most of his tracks, they have a retro vibe, punchy snares, and a TB-303 floating around somewhere. I was waiting a fair bit of time for this one on Planet X, I caught a snippet of it at WHP 2019, I couldn’t stop watching the videos on repeat. All round sniper.
Angelo Ferreri - Beginners
I heard this track in the early hours of a Sunday morning, partying in Oxford, the sunrise didn’t stop us, the great night it had been was topped off with this track, like a cherry on the cake. The punchy drums and half time Hip-Hop break down which curves into a big slap around your ears had me hooked instantly. Although this track was created by the legend Ferreri, it was released with little recognition, it was my secret weapon, hardly played by others up until recently. Unaware of the vocals sampled? It’s a Hip-Hop classic known as ‘Life’s A B*tch’ by NaS.
ENJ - Do It
Released in 2019 on ’Too Many Rules’ records, ENJ produced an incredible remix of ‘Street Player’ by Chicago which is my personal favourite out of all the remakes for this track. ENJ has taken a different turn for the original track by using a different horn melody as well as vocal snippets which are uncommonly used in other remixes. The Jackin’ Disco blended with House is a great track to keep the room moving.
