Songs have a fantastic way of transporting you to certain places, or moments, in time. For me, I love coming across songs that immediately make me imagine hearing them on a booming soundsystem. The kind of tracks that deserve to be admired in venues like the Warehouse Project in Manchester or Motion in Bristol.
Now, when I refer to 5 tracks for a big soundsystem, I don’t necessarily mean the loudest, heaviest, face-melting shellers (I’ll do them another week) that you’d expect to hear at a Drumcode night. Instead I have been thinking of the kind of tracks that are the peak-time bangers that you spend the next day speaking to your mates about and trying to shazam. The songs that get the ultimate response from the crowd.
Unsurprisingly all of the tracks I have chosen, have come from very specific memories that have stuck with me from various events in the past. Much of my time is spent shazaming tracks from the previous nights events and these are some of my absolute favourites that stand out.
Damiano van Erckert – Housem III
After a teasing and uplifting build up, the introduction of the booming, yet funky, housey bass in this track is without a doubt one of the stand-out experiences I have ever had from going to raves. To me, this track is the epitome of a peak time banger to treat the crowd to.
Enzo Siffredi, Be Like Butter – Ode to Omar The power behind this track is unreal. Feels like the soundtrack to a riot. There’s not much else you need to say about the track to be honest, it’s just awesome.
Denis Sulta – Nein Fortiate
Denis Sulta holds a very special place in my heart. Always reliable for an awesome, if not unpredictable set, and also responsible for some unbelievable production. His release of ‘It’s Only Real’ onto Jackmaster’s ‘Numbers’ label has become one of the most well recognised tunes within the underground house and techno scene. For this blog though, I have got to go with Nein Fortiate. You just have to look at the guy on his left in the video below to see why. Perfectly sums up how the right music can make you feel.
Here is the song on it's own:
Rhymos - Volcan This is a bit more of a mellow one. Having come across it a few years ago it’s one that I have never got bored of. So dark and moody, this is exactly the kind of track that makes me imagine hearing it reverbing around the halls of the Warehouse project.
Butch – Countach
It’s difficult to stay away from obvious ones with a category like this, but Butch had to be included for this ridiculous track. Acid power at its finest.
