Following the release of our newest single, we wanted to take some time to chat with the man behind the masterpiece Andy P a.k.a. Andy Pender
Hey Andy, thanks for sparing a bit of time to sit down with us and chat about your new release ‘Hot for you’!
Before we get into the release, I just wanted to ask a little about how this all came about. What made you start DJing and then producing?
I Started Djing when I was 16 on Vinyl and what really got me interested was listening to early mix tapes and the way that they were blending songs together….just seemed like a really cool concept for me so I was hooked.
Who would you say is your biggest musical inspiration?
From a Djing perspective no doubt the King Carl Cox but in terms of music id have to say probably Oasis being a kid of the 90’s it was the first time I realized for myself what an impact music can have an impact on the culture of the country etc.
What would you say has been your best career highlight so far?
For me playing peak time at Ministry of Sound this year followed by playing my first sets on the White isle which has always been a dream of mine.
Wicked! So its undeniable that ‘Hot For You’ is a banger – and I’m not just saying that as I was one of the guys who signed the track aha! What was the story on the lead up to the creation of this track?
I just had a vision that I wanted to create something with more of a disco vibe to it as Im a huge fan of that sound so set about getting to work.
When you were in the process of making this track what was the point that you knew you were onto something?
As soon as drums and bass were built it was just about finding a good hook and once I did I knew it had a groove.
Being the typical drummer nerd that I am, I have to ask… Did the drums come first on this project or did you attack it in a different way?
I generally always start with Drums and bass as I tend to find if these are solid and have a groove I can build something nice from there on, unless I have a particular vocal etc that I want to build something around.
What would you say is the favourite part of the track?
For me the bass line makes the track roll along nicely.
What DJ could you imagine dropping this tune into a set? (excluding RUBIX Residents of course)
Haha…someone like Melvo Baptiste from Glitterbox or Joey Negro.
I know from our friendship that we have a common connection and influence from the don’s over at DJ Gym, what sort of impact has being part of that organisation had on you?
They’ve been a massive help to me everyone from Marc Spence to Paul Dempsey and Buster they have all assisted my progress in different ways with great playing out opportunities to production help and most importantly they’re proper guys who are in it for the right reason which is the MUSIC.
Lastly is this your favourite track so far? Or have you got loads more heat in the lock up?
This is definitely up there, I am always working on stuff and yes have more heat in the locker that be released next year so watch this space….
